  • Counting the Cost - Qatar's gas expansion

Qatar, currently the world's number one exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG), recently announced that it will increase production from 77 million tonnes of natural gas to 100 million tonnes a year by 2024. With proven gas reserves of almost 26 trillion cubic metres, the peninsula is home to the world's third-largest reserves of gas after Russia and Iran. The majority of Qatar's natural gas is located offshore in the North Field which is shared with Iran. Gas has helped transform Qatar into one of the richest countries in the world, and at current prices, the announced increase in production would translate to revenues of around $30bn. Corporate energy giants like ExxonMobil, Shell and Total are already lobbying the government to take part in the expansion. So what does Qatar's ambiti...

So what does Qatar's ambitious natural gas expansion plan mean for the LNG market and the world's future energy supply? "The demand for LNG is expanding ... it has been said that towards 2025 in the first half of the next decade, supplies of LNG might be short and that's exactly what Qatar is banking upon. Announcing a major expansion of its export capacity, they [Qatar] aim at coming onto the market at the moment when supply might be relatively short," says Professor Giacomo Luciani from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva. In a dusty corner of Qatar's booming capital, a sign outside a modest restaurant popular with migrant labourers reads: "If you are hungry and have no money, eat for free!" FULL STORY: http://goo.gl/AHJ0zk Shadab Khan, owner of the Zaiqa restaurant: "We realise a lot of people out here do not get paid on time and do not have money, not even money to eat. So there were people who would come here and just buy a packet of bread. And they would eat the bread with water. "The payments are very very small like 150 euros – 200 euros – 250 euros a month as a salary, but they have a lot of self respect. Since the time we started this we’ve had very very few customers coming to ask for free food. Very very few." Ghufran Ahmed, mechanic: "I haven't eaten for free but I've seen many people doing that here. Many labourers out there want to eat for free, considering some of them are earning only 700-800, up to 1000 rupees out of which they have to pay for the food. But if they eat for free, they can save money to send back home."

A month after Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt severed diplomatic, trade and transport ties with Qatar and accusing it of backing terrorism, the country is suffering from isolation, but is nowhere near an economic crisis. The alliance against Qatar also may not have options to inflict further damage. As the world's top liquefied natural gas exporter, Qatar's gross domestic product per capita in purchasing power terms is the highest of any country. That means it can deploy money to counter almost any type of sanction. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/reuters/topNews/~3/PtKeEehu_68/us-gulf-qatar-economy-idUSKBN19R1WA http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com
